new uk musicals - writer registration
New UK Musicals is an online store of sheet music for the new generation of musical theatre writers in the UK. The site provides an online hub for performers to find the best new writing in the UK whilst at the same time providing an essential platform for writers to earn income from their work and build their fanbase.
After a number of conversations with the new writing community and organisations such as MMD it became clear that UK writers were lacking a significant outlet to get their music into the hands of performers. New UK Musicals was developed in response to that need by Darren Clark, himself a multi-award winning career musical theatre composer/lyricist. The site was developed in consultation with other writers and will continue to consult with the writing community as it develops to ensure that it works hard for writers. We aim to ensure that those purchasing your work know that their money is going directly into the pockets of the writers.
The site also aims to create a personal connection between performers and writers. We believe that the performer/writer relationship is one of the most important in the development of new work and we wish to foster this by building connections between the two communities.
Please have a read through the details of how the site works and if you have any questions please get in touch.

what will my profile look like?
Simply click on the below boxes to visit the website or to visit an individual' writer's page.
how are writers selected?
We are initially looking for a total of approximately 30 writers/writing teams for the 6 month pilot programme. We believe it is of vital importance that the work representing our scene is work of the highest quality. It is also important that the writers involved represent writers from different genders, and writers from diverse backgrounds.
The 30 writers/writing teams that we are approaching (including you) are writers whose work we respect and admire, who have also been working hard to build their own profile and are active members of the new musical theatre community in the UK. Of course beyond these thirty writing teams there are many talented writers and we will be looking to expand the number of writers on the site after the initial pilot programme whilst aiming to maintain high quality work.

how much will it cost?
NEW UK MUSICALS operates a writer subscription service with a £5 monthly subscription payable once the site is launched. As this is a pilot programme, this amount (and method) will be subject to review at the end of the initial pilot period. But it will always be paramount to keep costs minimal for writers.
As the administration and payment system will be centralised this will involve a certain amount of initial work for us to set up your profile, so there is a one-off joining fee of £10 per writer/writing team in order to set you up on the system.
In total, this will cost you:
£10 administration fee (one off fee, non-refundable)
£5 per month subscription fee, cancellable at any time.

how many songs can I sell on the site?
Initially you will be able to put UP TO A TOTAL OF TEN songs on the site. Ideally these will be your ten best songs, and those most suited for the target audience (people who want to sing new musical theatre at home, in cabarets, concerts and auditions). This will ensure quality and also ensure that the site is not saturated with a huge catalogue which then becomes difficult for fans to navigate. An initial maximum of ten songs from each writer will also encourage site visitors to peruse more than just the work of their favourite writer and will increase awareness of the talent in the community. As the site grows we will then look to expand the total number of songs available for each writer.
How will i get paid?
Payments will be made to writers on a quarterly basis. Remittance advice will be sent by email and will include a detailed breakdown of sales. Payments will be made to a single nominated bank account. It will be up to writing teams to split any sales appropriately. You will also be responsible for paying any tax on your sales. You will maintain ALL copyright and you will also retain the right to sell your music through any other avenues should you wish (such as your own website).
During the pilot programme all individual songs will be priced at £3.99 per song. We will also be offering special discount codes so prices will remain affordable for students or those who are struggling, but we will always consult with writers prior to any sale prices going live.
The online payment platform that we use (STRIPE) takes a 2.5% commission on sales (please note that New UK Musicals does not take ANY commission beyond the £5 subscription). This means that for every song sold at £3.99, STRIPE takes approximately £0.10. So you will receive a total of £3.89 for each sale.
